Unawatuna Tourism Development Society (UTDS) Children's Program

Background

The Tsunami destroyed a government school for 250 children (aged 5-10years old) as result local children no longer have a safe place where they can meet for activities. As yet, the government has not allotted land for rebuilding a new school. The children therefore need a central meeting place that will allow them to take part in community-based educational activities in a safe environment. At present, the children are divided, attending separate inland schools in the area.

The UTDS is running a Children's Program, where children can partake in activities such as arts, crafts, dance and theater. Most programs are organized in Yaddemullah Tempel and some of the guesthouses. Soon, a newly to be built community center with children's club will enable the village to unite and start to rebuild the lives of families and their children’s learning development.

At the proposed center, children would be able meet for additional classes and extra-circular activities that will enrich their livelihoods and improve their opportunities in later life. The center will also enable the children to partake in activities to help them face and overcome the tremendous losses they suffered because of the Tsunami. Ultimately the community center will be a place for learning, playing and healing.
